It's almost 2 billion miles from Earth, so saying "I love you to Uranus and back!", is a whole lotta love!!!
Uranus was named after the Greek god of the sky. According to myth, he was the father of Saturn and the grandfather of Jupiter.
n his Theogony, Hesiod (700 BCE) writes that Gaia, the personification of Earth, gave birth to Uranus (Heaven), along with Pontus (the Sea) and Ourea (the Mountains). All over, and to be a resting-place, Always secure, for all the blessed gods.
Obligingly, Herschel first called it Georgium Sidus (or "George's Star") after the then-King George III. However, arguments about the name persisted, not least because it wasn't a star. In the end, the name Uranus was adopted, being the father of Saturn, and Saturn in turn the father of Jupiter in Roman mythology.
Uranus gets its blue-green color from methane gas in the atmosphere. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere and is reflected back out by Uranus' cloud tops. Methane gas absorbs the red portion of the light, resulting in a blue-green color.
Uranus' nickname is the bulls-eye planet, a reflection of how its rings are not horizontal but vertical, making it appear like a bulls-eye on a target with increasingly large layers of rings.
Uranus is Big!!!
With an equatorial diameter of 31,763 miles (51,118 kilometers), Uranus is four times wider than Earth. If Earth was the size of a nickel, Uranus would be about as big as a softball. From an average distance of 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometers), Uranus is about 19 astronomical units away from the Sun.
Uranus is beautiful, even though it's full of methane gas!
